Why do people want to make money online?

By matt On October 17, 2008 Under Make money online

This may seem like an obvious question, why do people want to make money online, but I’d like to just flesh it out a bit for those that haven’t thought much about this concept before.

From my experience, most of the people who email me asking for advice on how to make money online are doing it for the sole purpose of creating an income that will change their current circumstances in some significant way.  They want to feel like they are in control and are their own boss. There are many people who have fantastic reasons for making money online, they want to be able to make just a small amount extra each week to help with paying the bills, or to get rid of their mortgage faster.  Others however, and those that are willing to put more into it, are looking for a way to make a passive or semi passive income online to give them freedom from employment.  They don’t want to work 40 hours per week to just make enough money to live on.  They want to be able to create a substantial amount of money that will allow them to travel, clear their debts, spend time with their family and even spend their time doing volunteer work for charity organisations.  The best part about the internet is that it is possible, when following the right methods, to achieve this, to  either make a small amount of money or a large amount of money online.  Like all things, the amount of work you put into it, can affect the outcome of how much you make.

My desire to make money online initially stemmed from the desire to leave the work force and fulfill my dreams outside of my 9-5 work.  I am a keen photographer, mainly with landscape photography and I seemed to never have enough time to spend doing this.  I also had a desire to work overseas for volunteer projects, helping communities in such places as Africa.  I didn’t want to leave my job until I had something in place that would continue to provide money for my family as well as take care of our debts, such as mortgage repayments.  Hence my journey to create an income online started.

I think, in anything that we do in life, without a clear goal or reason behind our actions we will just cruise along.  Not really knowing why we are doing things, or without any real desire to achieve.  The same applies to your goals online.  If you really want to make money online, then you need to define your reasons.  Do you want to earn extra money so that you can pay off your home quicker?  Or save up for a deposit for your first home?  Maybe you want to have some extra money so that you can travel regularly overseas.  Perhaps you want to be able to give money away to charities.  Maybe someone in your family is struggling and you want to be able to help them out financially.  If you can define your reaons then this will provide an excellent guide to your future actions. If you know that you want to earn $100 a month then you can work out what you need to do to achieve that.  If you want to earn $1000 a month, or $5000 a month, whatever the amount, with clear goals, you can then formulate your strategy to achieve them.

Making money online is never an easy thing to do.  When I first started I was working away for several months, a few hours a day before I started to see any difference in my bank account.  However now a couple of years on, I couldn’t ask for more.  Financial freedom is only something that I dreamed about, however now is a reality.

I would encourage you to write down why you want to make money online.  Use the reasons to then focus on the path to get there.  Never give up.

There are probably millions of people each year who look up ways to make money online, but never actually actually follow through with the idea.  There are only a small percentage of people who
